Coca Cola Opts for Recycled Plastic Bottles

It’s 2021 and consumer behaviour has changed. A lot of us have become conscious of buying environment-friendly products. Consequently, the Coca Cola company has introduced a line of 100% recycled plastic bottles in the US.

The Break Free From Plastic audit ranked Coca Cola as the world’s number one plastic polluter in 2020. Following this, Coca-Cola pledged in 2018 to make 100% of its packaging recyclable by 2025. Their new move is aimed at reducing plastic waste and greenhouse gas emissions.

The company has revealed new 13-ounce and 20-ounce bottles made from 100% recycled plastic, known as rPET. This covers the Coca-Cola, Coke Zero Sugar, Diet Coke and Coca-Cola Flavors brands. The rollout began in New York, followed by Florida and California, in February. Next, Texas will execute this in Spring, followed by the rest of the US later this year. Internationally, Sweden will be the first one to implement these policies.

You might be wondering if the cost has increased due to recycling. But, the new rPET bottles cost the same as regular ones! What’s more? The new sizes are just the right amount for snacking – something the customers have long been demanding.

Alpa Sutaria, Coca-Cola company’s vice president and general manager of sustainability, said,

“Given our scale and resources, we realise our unique opportunity and clear responsibility to make a positive difference in the global plastic crisis, bringing us closer to our ambitious World Without Waste goals”

Currently, only 12-14% of packaging worldwide uses recycled plastic. Coca Cola makes up a large portion of this market. Therefore, this percentage will become higher over time. A big ‘Yay!’ for the environment.
